2009. Former concentration camp of Auschwitz, Poland.


In 2009, thieves stole the metal sign from the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp with the intention of selling it for €150 000. Bruguera reproduced the sign, as the police found it when they recovered it, to reflect on history and its re-readings. The Cuban artist has suffered censorship in her country.


Biography:

Tania Bruguera (Havana, 1968) is an artist and activist who fights for freedom and against totalitarianism. The Cuban regime has arrested, interrogated and detained her on several occasions because of the contents of her work. Her artwork has been exhibited at documenta in Kassel, the Biennale di Venezia, the Bienal de La Habana and the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in London. She received the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas in 2021.
