In the 1970s, the artist ran into trouble with the police in various cities around the United States for his Image Mass Murder series: chalk outlines drawn on the ground and splashed with red paint, imitating a crime scene. Both citizens and authorities took them to be authentic and an investigation was launched.
Richard Hambleton (Vancouver, 1952 - New York, 2017) was nicknamed the “godfather of street art” in New York. He is famous for his chalk outlines that imitated murder victims and his graffiti of black silhouettes known as the shadowmen. He took part in the Venice biennials of 1984 and 1988.
