Behind his apparently naive and colourful artwork, the artist concealed a denunciation of social issues, such as the fight against the AIDS epidemic, from which he suffered. He was labelled a provocateur for defending the gay community and was arrested on several occasions for his graffiti in New York metro stations.
Keith Haring (Reading, USA, 1958 - New York, 1990) was an artist and activist on the New York scene in the 1980s, famous for his colourful murals depicting social issues such as the gay community’s struggle against AIDS. He participated in documenta 7 in Kassel, the Bienal de São Paulo and the Whitney Biennial.
