1799. Calle del Desengaño 1, Madrid.
In 1799, Goya put Caprichos on sale with an advertisement in the Diario de Madrid newspaper. Just fourteen days later, he hastily withdrew the prints from sale in fear of the Spanish Inquisition. The artist ended up giving the entire series to the king as a gift, thus escaping censorship.
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (Fuendetodos, 1746 - Bordeaux, 1828) is one of the most important Spanish artists in history and is considered the father of modern art. He was a painter for the Spanish Royal Family but also a person who was very aware of the political and social reality of the country.
