The piece, which is part of a series of portraits of objects immersed in the artist’s own urine, has been attacked on several occasions. In 1997, it was damaged with a hammer in Australia. In 2011, Catholic activists attacked it with a screwdriver in Avignon. In 2012, it caused protests in New York. In 2015, it was excluded from an exhibition in Lucca (Italy) for being too provocative.
Andres Serrano (New York, 1950) is an internationally renowned American photographer of Honduran and Afro-Cuban origin. He is known for his large-scale portraits and photographs of corpses. He is a member of the National Academy of Design in New York and was awarded the medal of the Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
